The He-Sea points: the sea where Qi enters the body

The He-Sea points are the fifth and last of the Shu Antique points on each meridian — the endpoint of the journey from source to sea. They are located at the knee on the leg meridians and at the elbow on the arm meridians: the places where Qi, after its long journey along the periphery of the body, penetrates deeply into the interior. This makes the He-Sea points the most deeply acting Shu Antique points — particularly suited to the treatment of internal organ problems.

The sea: deep, powerful, inward

The character "He" means "sea" or "coming together" — the place where separate streams merge into one large whole. At the He-Sea points, Qi flows from the periphery toward the centre of the body. From the knee and elbow, the meridian dives more deeply into the body toward the internal organs that it nourishes and regulates. This is why He-Sea points are so powerful for organ pathology: they reach the organ at its deepest level.

Digestive complaints: the primary application

The classical application of He-Sea points is the treatment of digestive problems — especially those related to irregular eating and drinking. Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are the most commonly mentioned indications. This is not accidental: He-Sea points are located near the knee and elbow, close to the Earth organs Spleen and Stomach, and their deep, internalising action makes them effective for disorders of the digestive centre.

Skin problems through the Yang meridians

The He-Sea points on the Yang meridians have an additional application: skin problems. Yang meridians run over the surface of the body and have a direct relationship with the skin. Through the He-Sea points on the Yang meridians, skin disorders related to the corresponding organs can be treated — acne through Stomach 36 in Stomach-Fire, eczema through Large Intestine 11 in Large Intestine-Heat, and skin problems through Bladder 40 in Bladder-Heat.

The lower He-Sea points: special Fu-organ points

A special subcategory consists of the lower He-Sea points — three additional He-Sea points specifically associated with the Yang organs (Fu organs) of the upper heating zone. Stomach 37 (Shangjuxu) is the lower He-Sea point of the Large Intestine and the most effective point for all Large Intestine disorders. Stomach 39 (Xiajuxu) is the lower He-Sea point of the Small Intestine, used to tonify and harmonise the Small Intestine. Bladder 39 (Weiyang) is the lower He-Sea point of the Triple Burner, used to regulate the Triple Burner and fluid metabolism.

Stomach 36: the most powerful tonification point of the body

Of all He-Sea points, Stomach 36 (Zusanli) is the best known and most frequently used. It is the He-Sea/Earth point of the Stomach meridian — but its action extends far beyond the Stomach alone. Stomach 36 is the most powerful tonification point for the entire body: it nourishes Qi and Blood, strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, supports the immune system and promotes overall vitality. Classical texts describe how daily moxa treatment of Stomach 36 prolongs life and preserves health. It is a point that deserves a place in almost every TCM treatment.
